A threatened split among the Jewish groups backing Haavara, Palestine office for execution of the Palestine-Germany transfer agreement, was averted late yesterday when the Vaad Leumi (Jewish national council) voted to continue participation.
The decision to continue was taken following a heated discussion, during which Tuesday’s statement by the Zionist Executive defending Haavara was debated. It was decided to accept the statement, in which the Executive had declared that the transfer agreement represents the only method by which a maximum of Jewish capital can be transferred from Germany to Palestine. The Executive had also explained that Germany does not profit from the arrangement since the capital realized from the sale of German goods in Palestine does not return to Germany.
