President Carter will not give any assessment of the results of Secretary of State Cyrus Vance’s 10-day trip to the Middle East until after he sees the Secretary at the White House on Sunday. “Any comment will come after that,” Presidential News Secretary Jody Powell said today after reporting that Vance will return Saturday night.
Meanwhile, former Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg met this afternoon with Carter at the White House. Powell said that he could not immediately report on the purpose of the meeting. It was understood, however, that Goldberg, who was the United States Ambassador to the United Nations in 1967 and was instrumental in drafting Security Council Resolution 242, discussed with the President the American position in the drafting of the resolution which is the basic element in the continuing U.S. policy on a Middle East settlement.
