A synagogue at Savigny Sur Orge, a suburb of Paris, was wrecked this week by a group of unidentified vandals who overturned the Holy Ark, trampled on the Torah scrolls and stole several collection boxes, it was learned today. The incident is the second anti-Semitic attack to occur in France within the last few weeks. In June unidentified vandals destroyed 198 graves out of 264 in a Jewish cemetery in eastern France. Both attacks have touched off community fears of a new wave of anti-Semitism in France.
The president of the Jewish community of Savigny, which numbers 350 families, described what he called “an unhealthy climate of anti-Semitism” in the suburb where the attack on the synagogue was preceded by an incident in which the windows of the youth club were shattered and paint splattered on the walls. Police are investigating the incidents.
