Professor Albert Einstein, the famous Jewish scientist and author of the theory of relativity, is regarded by the Catholic Church as an atheist, if the comment of the “Osservatore Romano,” usually the mouthpiece of the Vatican for official announcements, is to be taken as the official view of the Pope, Pius XI.
The Papal organ, in an editorial, yesterday, commends Cardinal O’Connell of Boston, who is now on a visit to Rome, for his recent attack on the famous scientist, concerning whose theories he stated that they were “befogged speculation producing universal doubt about God and His creation,” and “cloaking the ghastly apparition of atheism.” The “Osservatore Romano” declares that the American cardinal was right in his views about Professor Einstein’s theories. His theories, the paper says, have a “tendency to cut off faith and God from human life. This is authentic atheism even if camouflaged as cosmic pantheism.”
