In one of its strongest attacks on anti Semitism, the Vatican newspaper Osservatore Romano today denounced anti-Jewish persecution as “in human” and charged that propaganda against the Jews had assumed “proportions unworthy of twenty centuries of Christian civilization.”
The paper declared: “It is inevitable that any time we abandon the life of the gospels, human lives perish. Toward the Israelites we are not only extremely anti-Christian and anti-civil, but inhuman. for them the misery of exile and outlawing is not enough; it goes on to the pillory, beatings, wounding and death. Propaganda against the Jews assumes, wherever it is organized and led, proportions unworthy of twenty centuries of Christian civilization.”
The article ridicules recently announced action of Austrian authorities to check false accusations, declaring that “only now is Diogenes’ lamp for searching for false accusers lighted with 50 marks” (the sum offered by Nazi officials for persons exposing false accusers).
