Osservatore Romano, the Vatican organ, denounced as “slanderous inventions” reports that Adolf Eichmann’s flight to South American in 1951 had been aided by ecclesiastical circles in Italy.
The Vatican organ asserted that “what we know is that this individual (Eichmann) never received a Vatican passport, even under a false name, because it is not the habit of the Holy See to issue such documents to those not legally entitled to have them.”
Two of the principal radio networks in West Germany have been broadcasting accounts of Eichmann’s crimes, Klaus Happrecht, a nationally prominent radio commentator, took the attitude that Eichmann’s prosecution must be left to Israel. But he reminded his listeners, in providing details about the crimes committed by Eichmann and other leading Nazis, that “we must know who these men were and what they did.”
