The Vatican radio last night charged the Israeli Government with rejecting a request to return property belonging to the Franciscan Order.
Admitting that Israel has offered to return to the Franciscans the Chapel and Convent of Last Supper on Mount Zion, the broadcast said that the negotiations had broken down because the proposals advanced by the Order “have been rejected by the Israeli authorities.” These proposals, the broadcast stated, provided for “the repair of war damages, the return of all property seized, and permission for the members of the Order to leave the Old City and to circulate freely.”
