The Italian news agency Agenzia Diplomatica reported today that “according to authoritative sources,” the recent nomination of Msgr, Pierre Giorgio Chiappero as the new Latin Bishop in Israel “might constitute the first step toward official recognition of Israel by the Vatican.”
The news agency reported that Msgr. Chiappero “is said to have been charged with establishing contacts with the Israel Government.” The new Bishop is expected to arrive in Israel within the next six weeks to take up his new duties.
