The active interest in Palestine that has of late been manifested by the Vatican is further advanced by the publication of a communique on Palestine in connection with the meeting of the Assembly of the League of Nations. In this communique the Vatican voices the hope that the League of Nations’ favorable action on the Mandates Commission’s report on Palestine will also lead to a solution of the problem of the holy places in accordance with the Vatican’s proposals, the Catholic Reichspost reports from Rome.
Commenting on the uninterrupted attention that the Vatican has been giving to Palestine, the Reichspost asks whether the Assembly will now attempt to solve the problem of the holy places after Great Britain had rejected the Vatican’s proposal for a permanent commission charged with the supervision of the holy places. The Reichspost also recalls that the Vatican had turned down an offer of the late Lord Balfour for the administration of the holy places, an offer Britain later withdrew. Since then neither the League of Nations nor the British government has submitted a new project, leaving the entire question unsolved.
