The State Department today informed the United Rumanian Jews of America that the small vessel “Michai” carrying 28 Jewish refugees from Rumania has left Turkish shores for Palestine “with all documents in order.” The refugees are expected to be permitted to land in Haifa.
The “Michai” has been anchored at Istanbul since March 18 with the refugees not being permitted to land on Turkish soil. The American Ambassador in Ankara had been instructed by the State Department to intervene with the Turkish authorities to secure permission for the refugee passengers to land until Palestine visas were secured for them. The Ambassador replying, informed the State Department that the vessel left Istanbul for Palestine this week.
