Vice President Al Gore called on Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat to tone down anti-Israel rhetoric and make greater strides in fighting terrorism. In a speech to the annual policy conference of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Gore also underscored the United States’ commitment to Israel’s security interests, saying that current differences between the two countries over the peace process do not signal “the slightest weakening in our underlying unity of purpose” or a shift in relations. The dinner crowd Gore spoke to included 47 U.S. senators, 67 congressmen and 40 ambassadors.
