Vice President Richard M. Nixon was presented here tonight with an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws from Yeshiva University. The award was made at a special academic convocation at the Waldorf Astoria followed by the University’s 29th annual scholarship dinner at which Mr. Nixon was the principal speaker.
A highlight of the dinner which benefitted the University’s $750,000 scholarship fund from which 2,600 students are aided, was the presentation of the Mordecai Ben David Award to Dr. Bela Schick, veteran pediatrician and discoverer of the diphtheria susceptibility test which bears his name.
In his address, Vice President Nixon said that Yeshiva University was in the “great tradition” of privately-supported liberal arts and universities. He noted that the university’s provision of scholarship assistance to 84 percent of the student body meant the development of “brain power which otherwise would lie fallow.”
