The French Ambassador here, today refrained from commenting on the statement condemning the deportation of Jews from France, made yesterday by Secretary of State Cordell Hull at a press conference. Secretary Hull gave the American Journalists permission to quote him directly, indicating the grave view which he took of the situation.
After making his statement before the representatives of the press, the Secretary summoned Gaston Henry-Haye, the French Ambassador, to give him the exact text of his remarks which read: “Today is the deadline for the astonishing measures taken against a large number of unfortunate people who sought refuge in France in accordance with its tradition of hospitality. They include the delivery of these unhappy people to the enemies who have announced and in considerable measure executed their intent to enslave, maltreat and eventually exterminate them under conditions of the most extreme cruelty. The details of the measures taken are so revolting and so fiendish in their nature that they defy adequate description.”
