A decree issued by the Petain government today extends to Algeria the census of Jews and Jewish-owned property. Algerian Jews will be required to furnish information concerning themselves, their maternal and paternal grandparents and all their possessions including shares and real estate. According to the 1931 census there are 110,127 Jews in Algeria.
In unoccupied France the Jewish census continues in full swing. It is not yet known whether identity cards of Jews in the unoccupied section will be stamped with the word “Jew” as are the cards of Jews in the Nazi-held areas.
A list of Frenchmen whose citizenship has been restored, appearing in today’s Journal Official, contains the names of several Jews.
