The situation in the Austrian film industry which, under pressure from Germany, has had to eliminate from its talkies all who do not meet the requirements of the Aryan paragraph, is now being duplicated in the Austrian publishing world.
It was said here today that the government is much concerned over the fact that Jewish authors have by now been almost completely dropped from the publishers’ lists. It was indicated that the government may make representations against this on the ground that it is harmful to Austrian interests.
FORM “GHETTO-VERLAG”
The important {SPAN}Szo#nay{/SPAN} publishing firm has relegated all its Jewish authors, including the internationally known Franz Werfel and Sholom Asch, to a new branch enterprise which has been created in Munich and which has promptly been dubbed the “Ghetto-Verlag.”
The elimination of Jews from the film industry in Austria is affecting even Jewish actors who are not Austrian citizens. A big Vienna film company engaged Ernest Deutsch, the Praha actor, to play in two of its films, but the company afterwards obtained big credits from Berlin and as a result introduced the “Aryan paragraph.” Ernst Deutsch has now been informed that he will not be required.
