PLANS TO PRODUCE BIBLICAL PLAYS IN JERUSALEM AND TEL AVIV IN THE MANNER OF THE BAYREUTH AND MALVERN FESTIVALS WERE ANNOUNCED HERE TODAY BY A COMMITTEE OF NOTED JEWS INCLUDING DR. SIGMUND FREUD AND PROF. HEINRICH NEUMANN, FAMOUS EAR SPECIALIST.
THE PERFORMANCES ARE SCHEDULED TO BEGIN IN THE SPRING OF 1939, WITH THE HABIMAH AND OHEL, HEBREW THEATRE COMPANIES IN PALESTINE, PARTICIPATING.
THEY WILL BE GIVEN IN SPECIALLY CONSTRUCTED AMPHITHEATRES ON MT. SCOPUS IN JERUSALEM AND IN TEL AVIV, PALESTINE’S LARGEST CITY, WHOSE POPULATION OF 150,000 IS ENTIRELY JEWISH. THE AMPHITHEATRES, IT WAS STATED, WILL BE BUILT BY OSKAR KAUFMANN, BERLIN JEWISH ARCHITECT.
GUEST ACTORS WILL BE INVITED TO PLAY LEADING ROLES IN THE DRAMAS. AMONG NAMES SUGGESTED BY THE COMMITTEE ARE PAUL MUNI AND JOSEPH SCHILDKRAUT OF AMERICA, FRITZ KORTNER AND ERNST DEUTSCH.
MUSIC WILL BE PROVIDED BY THE NEWLY-ORGANIZED PALESTINE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, OF WHICH BRONISLAW HUBERMANN IS THE CONDUCTOR AND FOUNDER.
THE IDEA WAS INITIATE BY DR. ARTHUR RUNDT, VIENNA WRITER, WHO INFORMED THE JEWISH TELEGRAPHIC AGENCY THAT IN ADDITION TO THE LOCAL COMMITTEE, SPONSORING GROUPS WILL BE ESTABLISHED IN ALL IMPORTANT COUNTRIES.
OTHER MEMBERS OF THE VIENNA COMMITTEE INCLUDE DR. DESIDER FRIEDMAN, PRESIDENT OF THE VIENNA JEWISH COMMUNITY, AND JULIUS GOURAY, VICE-PRESIDENT.
