M. A. Ten enblatt, chief Austrian coorrespondent of the Jewish Telegreaphic Agency for the post sixten years, was arrested by the authorities at ten o’clock this morning and held incommunicado for several hours. He was ordered escorted out of Austra by Selven O’clock this eve- ning. No reason was given for Tcnenblatt’s arrest and deportation.
Three police officers entered the newspaperman’s home this morning; searched the house and confiscated copies of the Jewish Daily Bulletin of New York, a newspaper using the Jewish Telegraphic Agency service. Several manuscripts, articles and records belonging to the correspondent were also seized.
Tenenblatt was held Incommunicado by the authorities for several hours and his wife and associates were denied permission to talk with him. He was escorted to the frontier this evening by the police.
EFFORTS UNAVAILING
Efforts by the American Legation, the American consulate and the Polish “consulate to intervene in Tenenbiatt’s behalf we unavailing, they being-informed oy the Austrian Foreign Office that there was no record of the case. Because of the speed with which the deportation was ordered, the American and Polish representatives were unable to secure the assistance of government officials who might have intervened. The fact that today was Sunday added to the difficulty in taking steps, and it is believed that the arrest was effected today for this reason.
Mr, Tenenblatt, who is a Polish citizen, has heen chief Vienna representative of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency and a resident of this city for sixteen yaars. He is forty-six years old. During the World War he served as editor of the Jewish Daily, The Tagehlatt, in Iiwow, Poland.
The American Legation here has notified the State Department at Washington of the incident since the Jewish Telegraphic A.g’.ncy is an American-owned news-gathering ahd distributing organization.
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency yesterday requested the State Department at Washington to intervene with the Austrian government in connection with the arrest of Mr. Tenenblatt.
