Minister of Social Welfare Dobretsberger denied that he is anti-Semitic to a Jewish delegation that visited him to protest discrimination against Jewish physicians in Vienna hospitals.
Prof. Dobretsberger stated: “I am no anti-Semite. Believe me, any one with a human face I consider equal. I judge only by morals and ability.”
The delegation, which included Herr Friedmann, president of the Vienna Jewish Community, and members of the Union of Jewish Doctors, presented a memorandum complaining that Jewish physicians are being passed over in appointments to State hospitals. It pointed out that many positions remain unfilled because the only applicants for them are Jews.
Another grievance cited was that Jewish doctors are sometimes forced to leave hospitals after working four years in training without receiving necessary diplomas.
