George Sylvester Viereck spent the week-end in Philadelphia to a glorification of Hitler and a justification of the principles for which he stands.
Speaking before the Philadelphia Lecture Assembly, Viereck insisted that Hitler saved the world from the red wave of Communism, and that red wave would not have stopped at the Rhine but would have flooded Europe.
“The Socialists,” he said, “cast 6,000,000 votes in Germany and the Communists 6,000,000, before Hitler became Chancellor, and nearly half the members of the legislative body belonged to one or the other of these groups. Long before such a situation arrived in this country some one would arise to save American institutions.
“Whatever you may think of Hitler’s Jewish policy–with which I disagree–he has united 99 per cent. of the German people,” he added. “The welfare of 99 per cent. of the population is more important than the welfare of 1 per cent. Germany is the perfect blossom of democracy.
“Between Bolshevism and Fascism I prefer Americanism, but as between Stalin on the one hand and Mussolini or Hitler on the other, I’m for Mussolini and Hitler every time.
OPPOSES BOYCOTT
“I am opposed to the Jewish boycott and also to the boycott of Germany by the Jews. Germany buys $2 from us for every $1 we buy from Germany. Any interference with American trade is unpatriotic. The boycott is a nuisance to the Germans, but it is a calamity to the Jews.
“The German-Americans constitute 25 per cent. of the population of the United States and the Jews 3 per cent. Were the German-Americans to retaliate the same fashion we’d have a minor civil war on our hands.
“Hitler is the greatest German Chancellor of this century. Only Bismarck can be mentioned in the same breath. He saved Germany from ruin and Europe from war. Were he to fall tomorrow the hope of Germany would be gone.”
In an interview which he gave to Local newspaper reporters he deplored the “distorted” picture Americans are getting from Germany. This he attributed to the Jewish problem.
“Hitler is the first man in Germany,” he added, “strong enough to make peace with Poland and offer peace to France. In a year he has united the German people and he has at the same time saved the world from Communism.
