All the Jewish communities of this State are organizing for responses to the United Jewish Appeal, with this city in the lead. Rabbi Louis D. Mendoza is chairman of the local campaign committee.
A quota of $4,000 was decided upon as this city’s share of the $3,000,000 fund. This action was taken at a representative conference of all Jewish organizations here on May 1. Associated with Rabbi Mendoza are Dr. Wallace Spigel, Rabbi Alex Alan Steinbach, Mrs. Monroe Oberndorfer, Mrs. Philip Kroskin, Miss Lee Straus, Mrs. Edward Marx, Joseph N. Rafal, Julius A. Myers, L. J. Gordon, P. Spital, Sam Lipkin, Mrs. Bernard Wasserman.
A temporary committee was appointed in Portsmouth, headed by Mrs. I. H. Rosenfield, to make plans for a campaign to be held within the next ten days, with a goal of $750.
In Newport News a quota of $1,050 was adopted; Hampton-Phoebus launched its campaign on Wednesday; Berkley began its drive April 26; in Suffolk a committee is canvassing the community for funds; Lynchburg will shortly launch its effort, while communities in other parts of the region are either preparing for campaigns or have already launched them.
