Sir Barnett Janner, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, announced after a meeting of the Board here today that the proposed visit to England of a delegation of Hungarian Jewish leaders has been canceled. The announcement gave the following reason for the cancelation:
“When the names of the members of the Hungarian Jewish delegation were given to us, the fact emerged that the delegation would be composed entirely of lay members. Our correspondence with the Hungarians, however, was based on the understanding, expressly indicated, that a religious leader would be included. In fact, a visit, originally suggested for last October, was canceled on short notice by the president of the Hungarian community, because the Hungarian deputy chief rabbi was, due to illness, unable to travel at the time.
“For reasons not given to us, it has apparently again not proved practicable to include a religious leader in the Hungarian delegation, and we have therefore suggested that the visit be deferred until such time as a religious leader can be included. We have not yet had a reply to this suggestion.”
