A drive for $5,000 to be used for German Jewish relief,the Joint Distribution Committee,Hias,American Jewish Congress as well as several communal institutions not supported by the local community chest,was inaugurated here tonight simultaneous with a boycott rally in the Y.M.Y.W.H.A. B.C.Vladeck,manager of The Jewish DailyForward,was the principal speaker.In making an appeal for the success of the drive,he compared cuurent conditions in Germany with those of Czarist Russia.”I wish to pay my respects to the Jews and non-Jews,the Socialists,Communists,liberals and ministers in Germany today who still have the courage to stand up, face the oppressor and fight,”he said.
J.George Fredman,past national commander of Jewish War Veterans, assailed the German Austrian War Veterans,whose commander resides here,”as a Nazi organization and Union City as “hotbeds”of Nazi propaganda. He urged tightening of the boycott.
Addresses also were delivered by Rabbi R.H. Melamed of Congregation B’nai Israel; Charles Browne,a Catholic war veteran and Julius Kwalick,president of the Y.M.H.A. who presided .The drive,for which nearly $2,000 has already been subscribed,is under the auspices of the Jewish Council. Jacob Pfeferstein is chairman.
