The Board of Deputies of South African Jews today began compilation of a list of Jewish aliens volunteering for national service, announcing at the same time that aliens were not eligible for service in the regular defense forces.
Many Jewish aliens, it was stated, had enlisted in voluntary defense organizations even before war was declared against Germany. The Board declared that although there was no justification for the belief that their naturalization would be facilitated by this action, it nevertheless manifested their anxiety to acquire Union of South Africa citizenship at the earliest opportunity and their desire to repay the Union for its hospitality in extending to them a refuge.
