A British military court here today sentenced Nazi Field Marshal Erich von Mannstein to 18 years imprisonment following his conviction on nine war crimes charges including failure to protect Jews and other Soviet citizens who were shot, hanged, gassed and drowned by Gestapo troops operating in his command area during the war.
Von Mannstein was acquitted of eight other counts, including charges that he authorized and permitted the mass killing of Jews and other racial groups and that he authorized and permitted the transfer of Jews to Gestapo installations knowing that the Jews would be exterminated. The Nazi Field Marshal refused to plead for mercy. The British have announced that von Mannstein’s trial, the 938th of a German war criminal by a British military court, ends the war crimes prosecution in this zone.
