The possibility of direct talks with the Soviet Government on the situation of the Jews in the Soviet Union was discussed today in Milan at the opening session of a two-day conference of European leaders of the World Jewish Congress, marking the 25th anniversary of the organization. Delegates from England, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Greece, Belgium and Italy are attending the parley.
Last night, the anniversary was celebrated at a special meeting at the Barberini Palace in Rome, Speakers at the meeting included Sergio Piperno, president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities; Rome Chief Rabbi Elio Toaff; A. Sannini, representing the Rome Municipality; and Marlo Bisori, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior, who expressed the appreciation of the Italian Government for the activities of the World Jewish Congress. Messages were read from the Italian Foreign Minister and Minister of the Interior.
Israel Sieff, vice-president of the World Jewish Congress and chairman of the organizations European executive, praised the “courageous” role of Italian Jewry in the creation of the World Jewish Congress at a time when they were living under a totalitarian regime.
