A statement issued today by the American executive committee of the World Jewish Congress on the Austrian elections said that the W.J.C. “is profoundly disturbed” by the results of the elections, which took place Sunday, and which “demonstrated the considerable electoral strength of Nazi-minded candidates and revealed the deep roots of Nazism in the Austrian people.”
The statement, noting that the Congress speaks “for the silent multitudes who were Hitler’s first and most tragic victims,” said that the W.J.C. “regards the re-appearance of Nazi-minded groups on the Austrian political scene as part and parcel of the revival of Nazism as a Pan-German world movement and a potential threat not only to Jews everywhere but to the democratic development of Europe.”
