An urgently-summoned Mapai conference here heard today that workers’ wages in Israel will be cut in order to reduce the high cost of living. The wage outs are scheduled to go into effect on Friday, which was described here as a “turning day” in the Jewish state.
The Mapam and Communist parties are vigorously opposed to any proposed reduction in wages. According to one report, the Communists have threatened to call a nationwide strike on Friday. Meanwhile, Minister of Food and Rationing Dr. Dov Joseph, addressing today’s parley, announced that the first trainload of commercial goods will arrive in Jerusalem on August 5.
The U.N. Conciliation Commission’s technical subcommittee on refugees returned here today after inspecting the Tel Aviv and Nathanya areas over the week-end.
