Mayor Wagner of New York issued a proclamation today declaring the month of October to be “Released Time Month for Religious Education.” The text of the proclamation was handed to a group headed by Charles H. Tuttle, chairman of the Greater New York Coordinating Committee on Released Time, and including Israel Weisberger of the Jewish Education Committee.
The proclamation noted that 100,000 children in the New York City schools participate annually in the released time program. It urged “all those responsible for the care of our children to enroll them in their respective religious centers for spiritual and moral training.” It noted that the released time program has been in force in New York for 20 years.
