United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim said here today that Africa has an important place in efforts to bring about improved conditions in the Middle East. Waldheim addressed newsmen after meeting separately today with President Nixon and Secretary of State William P. Rogers. He said most of their discussions were related to financial and other problems of the UN.
The Secretary General stated, in reply to a question from the Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent, that the “African countries are very interested in solving the problem in the Middle Fast” and noted that the UN’s Middle East mediator Ambassador Gunnar V. Jarring will visit this week Senegal for talks with President Leopold Senghor and to Mauritania for talks with President Moktar Ould Daddah. Waldheim did not elaborate, Senghor headed a group of four African Presidents who conducted an exploratory peace mission in the Middle East last fall on behalf of the Organization for African Unity.
