United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim today condemned the Israeli Cabinet’s decision to open two religious schools in Hebron. He said the decision was in violation of UN resolutions including the March 1 Security Council resolution which condemned Israel’s settlements on the West Bank. Waldheim’s comments came in the form of a statement by a UN spokesman who said:
“The Secretary General has read press reports of the Israeli Cabinet decision regarding Hebron. The decision, if confirmed, would clearly be in contravention of the Fourth Geneva Convention and of a series of United Nations resolutions, the most recent of which was Security Council Resolution 465 of March 1. The Secretary General cannot but reiterate his profound concern that any such move would seriously hamper the search for a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East.”
