The sudden arrest of Dr. Benno Walter, vice president of the German B’nai B’rith continues to provoke intense interest among the German Jews. Dr. Walter is being held in a secret police jail. No one is permitted to communicate with him.
Dr. Walter was arrested last Friday ostensibly because of a speech he made in January at Gladsbach, but actually because he is the leader of the German B’nai B’rith. At the same time police raided B’nai B’rith lodges in a number of cities including Berlin, and confiscated documents found on the premises. Only Dr. Walter was arrested.
Stettin authorities today returned the Stettin lodge of the B’nai B’rith, confiscated some time ago as the result of a sudden raid, to the Jewish Community. The building is to be used as a Jewish community school. The authorities made it clear that they no longer regard the building as the property of the B’nai B’rith.
