Accused Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk will be extradited from the United States to Israel where he will stand trial on charges of war crimes, Justice Minister Moshe Nissim announced here Monday, only hours after the United States Supreme Court declined to review Demjanjuk’s appeal against extradition.

As is customary in crimes which carry the death penalty, a special court will be appointed to hear the Demjanjuk case. The court will be presided over by a Supreme Court justice, along with two district court judges. Nissim declared that it was Israel’s moral obligation to try Nazi war criminals who have lived freely, despite that 40 years have passed since the end of the Holocaust.

Demjanjuk’s extradition is expected immediately, after U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz signs the necessary documents.
