The War Department today denied a press report that the army is making temporary preparations for transfer of 100,000 displaced Jewish persons to Palestine from Germany and Austria.
The Department explained the necessity to plan for the contingency that it may be asked to participate in the movement of the refugees, but said that so far it is purely paper planning and not related to the yet unknown action by the American and British Governments.
If the War Department is asked to assist in transferring the 100,000, it pointed out, it would be a very substantial task. It also must have under consideration alternative plans should the inquiry committee recommendation for admission of the 100,000 not be carried out.
