War Dept. Honors Jewish Welfare Board for Recruiting Chaplains for Army Service

A Certificate of Appreciation from the War Department to the Division of Religious Activities of the National Jewish Welfare Board for its aid in “the procurement and endorsement of chaplains for service in the army and of the various forms of aid and encouragement extended to them in the performance of their duties,” was presented here today at a regular meeting of the Division, held at the JWB headquarters.

The Certificate, signed by the Secretary of War and the Chief of Chaplains was presented by Col. James O’Neill, Chief of Chaplains of the First Army. Rabbi Louis Levitzky, of Newark, vice-chairman of the Division, accepted the Certificate on its behalf. Rabbi David de Sola Pool is chairman of the JWB Division of Religious Activities which recruited and endorsed for chaplaincy a total of 311 rabbis in the course of World War II.
