been a complete reversal in the trend, so that we come to this convention with almost twice as many members as we had in 1932, when the present administration took office. This gratifying result has been due to increased vigilance in the organization department, but primarily to the renewed realization by Zionist districts that the very source of our strength was being undermined by the declining membership.”

ZUNDELOWITZ BEQUEST

The president’s report makes known the Albert Zundelowitz bequest of $40,240 to the Zionist Organization of America for the establishment of a colony for American Jewish Legionnaires. The fund will be expended by the Jewish Agency in cooperation with a committee in Palestine which will be named by the American organization.

In regard to the Palestine department of the organization, the report explains:

“This department has continued to embrace one of the most important activities of the Zionist Organization of America. The department, which is capably headed and administered by Dr. Simon Bernstein, renders consular service and assistance to American applicants who desire to leave for Palestine as settlers, tourists or under other categories. It extends aid to those desirous of bringing their European relatives to Palestine. During the past year, the events in Germany have further increased the labors of this department, conducted with a wholly inadequate staff. The value of the services of this bureau may be seen from the fact that during the last fiscal year, the Palestine bureau has secured permits to settle in Palestine for 425 American families, consisting of 1,323 persons. The aggregate capital brought into Palestine by them amounted to $2,423,000. It is estimated that about 8,000 persons applied to the Palestine bureau for information and assistance during the year. A large number of these are prospective settlers in the near future, who are in possession of considerable capital.”
