Chief Rabbi Hertz today issued instructions to all synagogues throughout England to omit the “piyutim” from the Kol-Nidrei services on Yom Kippur evening and also to shorten the Rosh Hashanah evening services in order that the services will conclude before the blackout.

Dr. Hertz likewise ordered synagogues not to sound the shofar at the Nehilah service on Yom Kippur since the service will conclude before the fast is ended. The Rosh Hashanah morning services will not be extended beyond noon.

In his Rosh Hashanah message Chief Rabbi Hertz stated that not for centuries has Judaism and Jewry been so close to annihilation as they are today in most European countries. Only a victory of Britain and her allies will put an end to the “demoniac terror” hanging over the populations on the European continent, he said. “The future of Israel in Europe and beyond, as well as the survival of civilization depend on that victory,” he declared.
