Pointing out that “Israel today is fighting a desperate battle to achieve victory over austerity, shortages, inflation and under production,” Edward M.M. Warburg, general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, today urged American Jewry to help Israel win its fight by making the U.J.A. campaign for 1952 a success.
The campaign this year will be conducted “on a crisis footing to help the people of Israel with their battle for economic survival and freedom, ” he said in a statement here. He cited the U.J.A. 1952 goal of $151,500,000, asserting that its adoption was based on the record of American Jews in contributing $150,000,000 to the U.J.A. in the crucial year of 1948, when Israel won independence.
Mr. Warburg announced that more than 750 Jewish leaders from all parts of the country will attend the U.J.A. inaugural conference in Miami Beach, which opens there on February 23 to launch the $151,000,000 drive. He stressed that, in addition to providing for programs in Israel, the United Jewish Appeal this year must make possible the movement to Israel of 120,000 Jews from Eastern European and Moslem lands, extend relief, welfare and rehabilitation assistance to 250,000 Jews in distress in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, and help receive and settle 8,500 displaced persons and refugees who will arrive here before the end of the year.
