Edward M.M. Warburg, chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, and Dr. Joseph Schwartz, its European director, left today for Prague after a tour of the Lodz Jewish children’s home, the largest in Poland.

In an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency before his departure, Warburg said he was impressed by the “vitality of the Jewish community of Poland.” He pointed out that in the past two years the Jewish community has rallied from its greatest catastrophe and has built a chain of children’s Homes, work cooperatives and cultural institutions throughout the country. “The Jewish organizations in Poland are doing a great deal of work,” he declared, “and judging from the accomplishments we have seen, that work has been done with much energy and heart.”

The J.D.C., he stated, will continue to help the Jews of Poland increase their productivity and aid the welfare, medical and cultural institutions. It will also help the Jews emigrate wherever it is possible for them to go, he added. Warburg declared that Polish leaders whom he met made a “great impression” and that from discussions with President Bolesaw Bierut and other government officials he “came to the deep conviction that they have a warm and sincere understanding of the fate of the remaining Jews in Poland.”
