Gratitude to the Netherlands Government for admitting the refugee passengers aboard the S.S.Cabo de Hornos to the island of Curacso and thus saving them from being returned to Europe, was expressed today in a statement issued by Edward M. M. Warburg, Chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee which made the arrangement with the Netherlands authorities in London under which the Cabo de Hornos passengers were permitted to disembark at Willemstad, Curacao.
“The action of the Netherlands Government in permitting these unfortunate people a breathing spell on Curacao until permanent refuge can be arranged for them is all the more gratifying since that Government is today so greatly preoccupied with its war effort,” Mr. Warbur g said. “It is in keeping with Holland’s traditional hospitality. It augurs well for the future of civilization that men and governments, even in the midst of the present chaos, can give heed to the distress of fellow men and offer them a helping hand.”
