The population of the principality of Liechtenstein is opposed to the marrige of its new ruler, Prince Franz Josef, to Baroness Elsa von Guttman, concerning whose nuptials much discussion took place in European centers because she was a Jewess.
Baroness von Guttmann was the unofficial wife of the present Liechtenstein ruler for ten years prior to the death of his brother. Prince John II. After Prince John’s death and the succession of Prince Franz Josef to the sovereignty of the 12,000 population of the principality he decided to legally solemnize their marriage. It is related here that a delegation representing the citizenry submitted a humble petition “not to give the Catholic people of Liechtenstein a Jewish princess.” The ruler was adamant in his refusal.
