Intensified American activity on behalf of the Jewish National Fund’s campaign for redemption of Palestine land was urged by Rabbi Israel Goldstein, president of the J.N.F., at a luncheon in his honor yesterday at the Hotel Lafayette. Dr. Goldstein will sail for Europe today from Montreal to attend the Zionist Congress at Lucerne August 20.
Obviously alluding to the projected Legislative Council, Dr. Goldstein warned against the “premature crystallization’ ‘of Palestine’s political pattern by the mandatory government and declared that “we must make every effort to persuade the mandatory government of the injustice of such an attempt.”
He reported that the Zionists of America are “beginning to show an increased sense of responsibility toward the Keren Kayemeth,” but pointed out that “Americans have a record with regard to the Jewish National Fund that does not yet stand favorable comparison with the Jewries of other countries.”
He said that the J.N.F. stands as a symbol of Zionist unity and a bulwark against speculation in Palestine land.
Dr. Goldstein urged unity in Zionist ranks so that “moral suasion” can be exercised on the mandatory government.
Maurice Levin, chairman of the J.N.F. campaign committee, who tendered the luncheon, was not present. Clarence Y. Palitz was toastmaster in his stead. Speakers were Morris Rothenberg, president of the Zionist Organization of America; Louis Segal, secretary of the Jewish National Workers Alliance; Solomon Kerstein, Abraham Goldberg, Dr. Henry R. Gold, Dr. Alexander S. Wolf of St. Louis, Magistrate Anna M. Kross, and Mendel N. Fisher.
