### was told of the case of a boy of twelve who also wanted to kill himself because one of his ancestors had been Jewish, and he was therefore spat upon and insulted by his fellow pupils at school. This merely explains how Jews in Germany, children and old people not excepted, have to suffer as a result of the official Nazi persecutions.”
“Humane extermination of the Jews” is the definition which the Nazis give to their solution of the Jewish problem. This obvious contradiction of terms is explained away by the government by the fact that they do not practice justice but conduct a policy, as Goering announced.
“Some time ago the Nazis made an effort to attribute the atrocities to other causes, saying that their victims had been shot down while ‘trying to escape’ or that they had ‘committed suicide’.
ECONOMIC STRANGULATION
“But even more serious than the atrocities is the economic strangulation of the Jews. The turning of the mob against a professional Jewish competitor, where the mob will beat up any Jew whom a Nazi may consider to be in his way, has been a frequent occurrence in present-day Germany.” Mr. Eddy revealed that he knows of a list of thirty-five Jews, American citizens, who have been beaten or ill-treated by the Nazis. “One Jewish doctor, an American citizen, was beaten until he was almost dead, although I cannot say whether he actually died. Some of the Jewish doctors and lawyers have been beaten or tortured but their names cannot be disclosed as they or their families are still held as hostages, and are {SPAN}threat###{/SPAN} the Jewish race.”
WHY HE MADE SPEECH
Referring to his famous speech in Berlin, which, with its frank and outspoken condemnation of Nazi Germany became known all over the world, and which, so far as is known, was the only one of its kind delivered in Germany, Mr. Eddy said that he had taken this step on the advice of a Nazi, who gave him the hint not to base his appeal to Germany on any principles of humanity. The Nazis care nothing for this. They have to be shown that persecution of the Jews will only lead to loss of trade and international condemnation, particularly on the part of Great Britain and the United States, if the argument is to have any effect. “Germany seems to have a moral blind spot in its attitude towards the Jews, and nothing but economic and international pressure will move her from her present policy.”
“I have just come out from Soviet Russia,” Mr. Eddy concluded, “and I am told that there are four times as many prisoners in the concentration camps in Germany as there are in Russia. The heads of the German government know very well what is happening to the Jews. Their policy is just as deliberate as the denials and assurances which they try to impose upon the outside world. The Nazis claim to have delivered Germany from the horror of Communism, but I found conditions far worse in Germany than in Russia, where the Jew is treated as an equal under their ideal of a classless society and where they fully utilize the brilliant gifts of leadership of the Jewish race.”
