The Soviet proposal for a nuclear-free zone in the Mediterranean is a propaganda move aimed at ousting the United States Sixth Fleet and does not pertain to developments in the United Arab Republic or other nations bordering on the Mediterranean, State Department sources said today.
The Russians referred only to water-borne nuclear weapons in the Mediterranean. The only such weapons known to exist there are the missiles of the United States Sixth Fleet. The proposal was interpreted here as having nothing to do with any construction of nuclear weapons in the Middle East or any other Mediterranean countries.
