Alfred M. Cohen, president of the Independent Order B’nai Brith, has received a report from Richard E. Gutstadt, executive secretary of the Wider Scope Committee for the Pacific Coast, advising him that Washington has “gone over the top” in its Wider Scope Campaign. The drive was led by Judge Stern. Not only has the State as a whole passed its goal, but every community in the State achieved a similar result.

Utah has raised its quota, due largely to the success of a drive in Salt Lake City. Oregon is expected to reach its quota by the end of next week, Mr. Gustadt reported.

A drive is scheduled to be held in Oakland, California, the first week in May to be followed by one in Los Angeles before the end of the month.

District No. 7 will launch its drive following its convention at Memphis on May 1st and 2nd. A Wider-Scope Conference will be held the following day and plans devised for raising the district’s $200,000 quota.

Mr. Cohen will be the principal speaker at the Memphis convention, which will be addressed also by Dr. Boris Bogen, executive secretary of the Order and of the Wider Scope Committee.

Governor Smith, Mayor Walker and Senator Robert F. Wagner are announced to speak at the banquet to be held under the auspices of District Grand Lodge No. 1, Independent Order B’nai Brith, on Sunday evening, May 8th, in the grand ballroom of the Hotel Astor.

The banquet will mark the opening of the convention of the District Grand Lodge which will be held at the Astor on May 8th and 9th.

Among the matters that will be considered at the convention will be the establishment of Hillel Foundations at universities in the United States attended by considerable numbers of Jewish students. Four Hillel Foundations have already been established, at the Universities of Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin and another will begin to function in the Fall at the University of California.

Relief work among Jewish immigrants and a house building project in Jerusalem, known as the B’nai Brith Palestine House Building Fund” will also be considered at the convention, which will be attended by delegates from lodges in the large cities of New York State, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, and the Dominion of Canada. Alfred M. Cohen, of Cincinnati, President of the Order, will address the opening session of the convention.

There are twelve B’nai Brith lodges in Greater New York and sixty-two in District No. 1. with a total membership of 7,800.
