Washington Urged to Act on Arab Discrimination Against U.S. Jews

A resolution calling upon the President of the United States to sever diplomatic relations with Arab countries discriminating against American Jewish citizens, if efforts to halt such discrimination fail, was adopted here today at the convention of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America.

The delegates, representing 3,000 Orthodox synagogues throughout the country, pointed out that the United States has historically refused to permit any foreign power to impair the religious liberties of American citizens. The convention also urged the U.S. Government to strengthen the security of Israel in order to prevent the outbreak of hostilities. It asked that the U.S. itself bear the responsibility for supplying Israel with defensive arms, rather than merely encouraging other states to do so.

In another resolution, the delegates expressed their anxiety over the threat of radio-active dust from H-Bomb tests. They declared that since the H-Bomb test issue has become a matter of national debate among the candidates for the Presidency of the U.S. the Union feels it proper to do no more than express its “deepest concern and anxiety over this potential threat to human life.”
