In view of the visible water supplies, says an official notice issued to-day by the Jerusalem Municipality, no water will be supplied after May 1st. anywhere outside the municipal area, nor for any building construction, or gardens inside the municipal area after April 1st.
The restriction of the water supply indicated in this official notice is bound to cause difficulties in the Jewish suburbs, and to cripple the building activity inside the city.
Jerusalem’s water famine was discussed a few days ago in a conversation between the high Commissioner, Sir Arthur wauchope, and a delegation of the Jerusalem Chamber of Commerce. Members of the delegation, which was headed by Mr. Shelley, pointed out that the development of Jerusalem was being gravely retarded because of the water shortage, and that people in Egypt and elsewhere were being discouraged from using Palestine as a summer resort for that reason.
The High Commissioner replied that he was deeply concerned over the water situation and that both as High Commissioner and a resident of Jerusalem, he would do his utmost towards remedying the situation.
