A wave of hope is sweeping over Europe’s Jewish displaced persons, Rabbi Ferdinand Isserman of St. Louis declared here following his return from a seven-week inspection tour of France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium and Holland.
“The dignity, courage, resourcefulness and, above all, the iron will to live of Europe’s displaced Jews are an inspiration to behold,” Rabbi Isserman said. He visited Feldafing, Furth, Foehrenwald, Bamberg and Winsheim displaced persons camps in the American Zone of Germany. Morale among the DP’s in Germany, as well as in France, Italy and other parts of Europe, is at a new high as a result of the establishment of the State of Israel, and the consequent possibility of imminent transfer to the Jewish state, he declared.
Rabbi Isserman said that his observations in Europe had underscored for him the vital necessity of continuing and expanding the work of all three agencies of the United Jewish Appeal–the United Palestine Appeal, Joint Distribution Committee and United Service for New Americans–“since the problem of Europe’s Jews can only be solved by the Joint operations of these three groups, which bring succor and aid to homeless and oppressed Jews no matter where they be.”
