“We do not want the British government. Give us the Turks,” shouted Abdel Hassin Kalipha at the head of a mob of several hundred Arabs who gathered outside the Governorate at Jaffa on August 25, according to evidence of the British Officer Atkins, an Arab corporal and a sergeant, before Judge Stubbs, trying the accused on the charge of incitement to attack the Jews and the government offices.

Most of the crowd were armed with sticks, the sergeant testified. Abdel Hassin Kalipha, brandishing a club, shouted: “The Jews are slaughtering us. Let us avenge ourselves and massacre them. We do not want the British government, we want the Turks!”

The police tried unsuccessfully to disperse the crowd until an armored car arrived and fired into the crowd which became wild at the sight of the killed and wounded. The mob shouted, “Give us arms.”

The accused was remanded to the District Court. Surprise was expressed that only one was arraigned among hundreds well known to the police.
