A rumor that 1,400 persons have been slain by Nazis in Hamburg received wide publicity today as a result of a question put to Premier Ramsay MacDonald by Colonel Josiah Wedgwood. In reply the Premier said that the question would have to be referred to the Minister for Foreign Affairs.

The press here continues to devote a great deal of space to German excesses, and much sympathy is expressed with Jewish sufferers. In particular, leaders of the Christian Churches have expressed their indignation publicly. Of special importance is the statement made by Archbishop Downey, the Catholic Prelate of Liverpool, who declared: “I, for one, shall do everything in my power to protest against this exaggerated pseudo-nationalism.”

Of special significance is the growing movement to boycott German shops in London and German goods. In the East End of London, the Jewish quarter, posters have been pasted up bearing signs “Boycott German Goods.” In addition, numbers of Jewish firms have announced the cancellation of orders from Germany.

One of the most impressive protest actions promises to be a delegation representing 100,000 British schoolteachers, which proposes to call on the German Ambassador in London in order to express their indignation.
