Citrus picking will be resumed tomorrow in Israel’s orchards following a week-long ban on harvesting imposed by the national citrus board in the wake of storms which threatened to pile up rotting fruit on Israel’s wharves and railroad sidings.
With the improvement of weather conditions in the last few days and intensified loading activities on the docks, all standing stocks of fruit have been put aboard outgoing freighters. By late tomorrow fruit will begin arriving in Haifa again and will be moved to the dockside.
Diamond polishing workshops throughout Israel have closed down for a ten day “holiday” while waiting for business to pick up. In recent months orders from abroad, chiefly from the United States, have dropped off drastically. If new orders do not pick up in the next ten days the shops may be closed for a further, indefinite period.
